Of Mages, Portals, and Cats: Incredible Exploration Potential Teased in Tragic Questline

It’s all Hallowfall all the time today it seems! We have another memorable quest from the War Within. It’s another sad-leaning one, as we get a tease of the main Arathi Empire and just barely miss out on going there, to to mention the possible potential for much wider exploration!

Let’s not say they’re a dime a dozen, but it seems inspiring and touching quests are a real thing in the War Within. The community certainly seems to think so. The latest one to get a spotlight is The Last Mage, which starts in Hallowfall.

Magic Works in Mysterious Ways

General Steelstrike in the Church of Mereldar tasks you with helping Wenren Althal, a mage in Beledar’s Bounty. As the only surviving mage of the Hallowfall Arathi, he’s trying to open a portal back to the Empire.

Wenren’s enthusiasm for creating the portal, despite him not knowing much about teleportation, is infectious. If you talk to him, he has a lot to say about the Hallowfall Expedition, his research, and why he’s so zealously trying to create a portal. Although his request for crab organs to do that does put him squarely in the crazy mage territory.

After some dead crabs, connected nodes, and blind portals, the story takes a shocking turn. Aethen999 has a good, non-spoilery summary of it, and the feelings it evokes in many. Here’s just some on offer from the community.

The Full Quest

Here’s the complete questline, if you want to check it out.

Even being such a short one, Wenren’s quest is a testament to some serious writing chops in the War Within, and likely just further cements Hallowfall as everyone’s favorite zone.

When you think about it, the actual value lost here is much bigger than “just” being able to visit the Arathi homeland. With the memory spell, we could open portals to ANY being’s birthplace! Can you imagine the possibilities? Even a flower could lead us to a brand-new world! What are some of the most interesting places we might be able to go with the people/plants we already have access to in the WoW universe?
