Which Class Are You Starting With in Dune: Awakening?
With launch day on the horizon, a Reddit poll has triggered a fun discussion about which class players are planning to start with in Dune: Awakening. And it turns out: melee is back on the menu.
Out of over 1,000 votes, Swordmaster and Bene Gesserit came out on top, which is interesting considering they are harder to unlock and often described as “janky” or “hard to master.”
Here is how the poll looked:
- Swordmaster – 33%
- Bene Gesserit – 30%
- Mentat – 19%
- Trooper – 17%
Why Is Melee So Popular Right Now?
According to many replies, Swordmaster’s knee kick ability is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It has both strong mobility and one-shot potential in early PvE, especially when paired with traversal tools like Emperor’s Wings.
Next to Swordmaster, it seems most players are going for Bene Gesserit because of Bindu Sprint, which helps you zoom through the desert early on. And, of course, there is also gameplay; players love the rogue-style kit and knife-based combat. One commenter beneath the Reddit post said it simply: “I’m not picking BG for melee, I’m picking it to run faster on the sand.”
Mentat and Trooper Still Have Fans
Mentat is seen as a good pick for solo players who want to drop turrets and play more tactically. On the other hand, the Trooper’s shigawire grapple is great for mobility and vertical map access. But both classes can be unlocked quickly during regular play, which might explain why fewer players are choosing them as starters.

Still, some are thinking long-term – planning to grab Bene Gesserit or Swordmaster first, then switch into Mentat or Trooper once they are unlocked.
The Community Is Already Theorycrafting Hard
One thing is quite clear: even before the game launches, Dune: Awakening players are already min-maxing movement tools, combo synergies, and PvP potential. The current ‘overall vibe’ is that stunlock-heavy melee might be meta. However, there is also an argument to be made that most of this will not matter long-term since you can unlock and respec into everything eventually.
