How To Defeat AT Uth Duna Under 14 Minutes

Check out the following sections on how to defeat Arch-tempered Uth Duna in under 14 minutes!

Study Up on Uth Duna

The first and most important step to any good hunt is studying! Uth Duna is an apex monster from the Scarlet Forest, and often takes advantage of its large body size and the natural environment. Get caught in its waves too many times, and you’ll be the one swimming with the fishes!

Arch-tempered Uth Duna, on the other hand, kicks the difficulty up a notch! As its moveset is a lot faster, hunters will need the best reaction timing (or leg day!) to defeat it quickly. If you’re unfamiliar with its strengths and weaknesses, check out our Uth Duna guide to start studying!

Use Your Best Equipment and Items

Pick the Best Equipment in Monster Hunter Wilds

Don’t sleep on a weapon or armor set bonus you haven’t tried yet! All craftable weapons from the Lagiacrus Tree have the Convert Thunder Resistance skill, which can significantly improve your Thunder Attack damage based on your Thunder Resistance. Consider changing out your mantles too, as Uth Duna sure hits hard!

All Free Challenge Quests allow you to use whatever equipment and items as necessary, so remember to craft and upgrade for the best stats and skills possible!

If you’re not using an Artian weapon, you should consider other Thunder or Paralysis weapons instead. For your secondary weapon, you can consider using Hunting Horns for Attack Up (L) or other buffs. We have all weapon guides on Icy Veins, which cover how to play and build the best sets for hunting!

Customize Radial Menu

You can also customize your item loadouts and radial menus for quick crafting! This is a convenient way to craft common items without opening up the Crafting List every time. In addition, it’ll also allow you to carry “two” traps at once: the actual trap itself, and the crafting materials needed to make another trap.

Trapping is very useful for keeping Uth Duna in place (along with Flash Pods!), as the monster likes to “belly flop” around often. But don’t forget: this quest wants you to slay the monster! If you’re struggling to survive or deal extra damage, you can also consider other consumables, such as:

  • Dust of Life, Lifepowder, Max Potion, or Ancient Potion
  • Hardshell Powder or Mega Armorskin
  • Demon Powder or Mega Demondrug
  • Any Barrel Bombs
  • Nulberries
  • Dash Juice (for any Stamina-heavy weapons)

Eat Your Meals!

Eat A Meal Before Hunting

In Free Challenge Quests, you can also keep food skills from eating meals! There is a hard limit of fainting 3 times per quest, so definitely take a meal that has either Insurance or Moxie on it. Capture Pro isn’t going to help much here, as you must slay Uth Duna (not capture!) to complete the Free Challenge Quest.

You can also grill your own meals through the Base Camp menu inside your tent. As this Free Challenge Quest period overlaps with the Festival of Accord: Flamefete, you can take advantage of Flamefete Barbecue Meals before they’re gone!

Update Your Quest Settings and Pop-Up Camps

Free Challenge Quest Settings

Free Challenge Quests have some special rules compared to Arena Quests. Here’s a list of all conditions applied to The Daunting Downpour:

  • No SOS Flares Allowed
  • No Capture Allowed; You can only slay the monster
  • Cannot join a quest in progress; Must join before departure
  • If your Max Members and/or Multiplayer Settings allow, Support Hunters will join the hunt too
  • Any Equipment, Item Loadout, and Meal Effects are Allowed

As the monster’s HP and stats scale with the number of participating hunters, you can set the Max Members to a lower threshold you’re more comfortable with. This can allow you to kill Arch-tempered Uth Duna faster, but the monster may attack you more often!

In addition, you can also set up your Pop-up Camps ahead of time. Arch-tempered Uth Duna travels between Areas 17, 15, and 13 often, so you’ll want to start the hunt nearby, such as from Area 17: Great Lake Shore. Depending on your hunt progress, Uth Duna may travel all around the Scarlet Forest, with a focus on areas with water.

Manage Pop-Up Camps

Try to set up your Pop-up Camps appropriately, so you can reduce travel time! Less time traveling, more time hunting! If you notice fast enough, you can also set up traps to stop Uth Duna from leaving the area. Perhaps you’ll deal enough damage to make the monster stay?

Practice, Practice, and Practice!

Most of these are general recommendations, but you can fine-tune your gameplay the more you play the Free Challenge Quest! Definitely try out different ways to improve, such as bringing your friends or picking more effective equipment!

Your time gets recorded the moment Arch-Tempered Uth Duna dies, and there’s time afterwards to carve to your heart’s content. You have until August 12th, 2025 at 12:00AM UTC to keep trying, so don’t give up!
