Ben Starr, the actor who gave us Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI, admitted he almost said no to Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. A while ago, at PAX West 2025, he explained that he was “so happy” with his work as Clive that he did not want to risk messing it up with another role in the series.
What changed his mind? The chance to play Dycedarg, a character Starr describes as “very, very different” from Clive. That difference gave him the confidence to take the leap, and honestly, it makes sense – Dycedarg is a darker, more ruthless figure, which gives Starr a whole new kind of performance to explore.
From Hero to Villain
Ben Starr’s voice work in FFXVI was not just good; it won him awards and cemented him as one of the standout Final Fantasy leads. Taking on a villain-like role in Tactics shows that he is not afraid to break away from Clive’s heroic vibe, and so, naturally, fans are already curious to hear what he does with it.
Who Is Ben Starr?
If you did not know him before FFXVI, Starr is a British actor with a mix of stage, TV, and gaming roles under his belt. His work as Clive earned him critical acclaim and a Golden Joystick Award for Best Lead Performer, and now he is expanding his Final Fantasy footprint with Tactics.

With Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles adding full voice acting for the first time, Starr stepping in as Dycedarg feels like a big deal. If his past performance is anything to go by, we are in for something special.
