Assassin’s Creed Shadows: When & How You Can Play as Yasuke

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you initially control Naoe, a skilled Shinobi. Yasuke, the legendary samurai, becomes available only later in the game. Here is exactly how and when you will be able to start playing as Yasuke, for those eager to control the legendary Samurai!

How to Unlock Yasuke

You do start the game with Yasuke, but after the main first events, you switch to Naoe and follow the intriguing story of the Igan Shinobi. It then takes a while until you get to play as Yasukle again.

To unlock Yasuke as a playable character, you need to progress through the main story. You will have to complete the following quests:

  • Kill the first two major targets:
    • The Wounded
    • The Golden Teppo
  • Complete Temple of the Horseman main quest, and you will get access to your third target
  • Complete Lightning and Thunder
  • Complete Mibuno Showdown

This sequence marks the conclusion of Act 1 and should unlock Yasuke once you head back to the Hideout.

How Much Time Do You Need to Unlock Yasuke

The time required to reach this point varies based on individual playstyles and the amount of side activities you do. However, if you focus primarily on main quests, you can expect to unlock Yasuke after approximately 5 to 8 hours of gameplay.

Those who go deep into side content will, of course, take much longer to reach the end of Act 1 and unlock Yasuke. This depends on the amount of side stuff you do.

How to Switch Between Naoe and Yasuke

Once unlocked, you can switch between Naoe and Yasuke at any time. Switching is really simple, all you need to do is:

  • Open your Main menu
  • Go to the Equipement tab
  • Push the required button on screen that allows you to switch your Active Character

Once you Switch, your game will reload, and the Season may change, so be mindful of that. It is also good to know that they will not inherit the Wanted status of the other character. If you have a high wanted status with Naoe, you can switch to Yasuke to walk around safely until you can get rid of the Wanted status.

Of course, you will not be able to switch in the middle of a fight, or if you are under a quest or area that requires a specific character. Some activities such as Kofun sometimes require one or the other, and some quests are of course character specific.
