Gearbox has dropped a new Borderlands 4 character short, and this time it is all about Rafa’s story! A prototype exosuit soldier caught between corporate greed and his own stubborn will to live. You are probably wondering if he is dead, undead, or something in between. But don’t worry, he is wondering that too. And so is literally everyone.
You can watch the trailer here:
YOLT – You Only Live Twice
The video, starts as some sort of promotional show from Tediore Corporation. They are introducing their new “LiveFrame” technology, and it is an exoskeleton built to keep soldiers alive in the field. Rafa, a test subject from the Seam asteroid belt, is their first prototype. He was raised in microgravity, so he can barely survive on solid ground without the suit, but he is proud to serve.
Except there is one issue that raises up soon. Tediore execs declared the project too expensive. Their alternative is the DeadFrame Initiative. And that’s zombie-like reanimated soldiers that cost a tenth as much because, as they coldly put it, “The most expensive part of soldiers? Keeping them alive.”
Rafa is not having it.
Refusing to become a budget corpse, Rafa breaks free, declaring, “Rafa is no one’s savings. Rafa is free.” He escapes Tediore’s control, leading to a really hilarious sequence with the other Vault Hunters questioning if he is a vampire, zombie, or something else entirely.
“I am alive!” Rafa insists again and again, annoyed that no one seems to believe him.
He finally embraces the absurdity of this situation, and the crew even turns the classic “YOLO” into an entirely new motto! YOLT – You Only Live Twice.
Rafa’s short is the perfect example of what Borderlands is and its tradition of mixing a ton of dark satire, hypercapitalistic world, and memorable, unhinged characters.
