First Silent Hill Game Set in Japan

This game marks a big change for the franchise: Silent Hill f is the first title set entirely in Japan, specifically in the fictional rural town of Ebisugōaka, inspired by real-life locations like Kanayama in Gifu Prefecture. The game takes place in 1960s Japan, leaning into themes of beauty and terror, deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

According to the devs, the team wanted to bring Silent Hill back to its horror roots while embracing the unique tone and atmosphere of Japan; something they felt had been slowly fading in more recent entries.

Story, Themes, and Characters

The story follows Hinako, a young female protagonist, who, unlike female characters in most previous titles, is not just a side character or supporting role; she has to find her own path through the psychological and supernatural horrors ahead. The narrative explores what Silent Hill truly represents: a space of inner turmoil, memories, pain, and emotional struggle—rather than just a town.

Key story themes include:

  • “Finding beauty in terror”
  • Horror that comes from within beauty; a traditionally Japanese concept
  • Focus on personal struggle and emotional isolation, staying true to the core of Silent Hill

Writer Ryukishi07 was brought on board specifically for his mastery of Japanese horror storytelling, and is also a long-time Silent Hill fan.

A Standalone Story, Accessible to Everyone

Even if you have never played a Silent Hill game before, Silent Hill f is a completely standalone experience. You don’t need prior knowledge of the series to enjoy it, but returning fans will still recognize plenty of classic Silent Hill DNA.

“This is a new chapter that respects the roots of Silent Hill while offering something fresh and unsettling,” said the developers.

Music, Monster Design, and More

Akira Yamaoka returns to compose the soundtrack for the game’s “fog world” scenes, while Kensuke Inage composed music for the “other world” segments. Sound design weaves traditional Japanese influences into the haunting audio.

When asked about “what makes this game a Silent Hill?” the team replied that monster design remains a core pillar, with the developers stating that it is the one tradition they knew had to continue.
