WoW Developer Interview with Ion Hazzikostas at gamescom2024 – The War Within

Content creator and streamer MrGM sat down with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas at Gamescom 2024 to discuss The War Within! Here are the highlights!

Interview Highlights

We cover the highlights of the interview below:

  • Dracthyr Expansion – Dracthyr will be able to become new classes such as Warrior and Mage in a future patch, but will not be able to play Druids. This is due to the narrative decision that Dracthyr, adept at combat and spellcasting, won’t have the shapeshifting capabilities associated with Druids.
  • Story Mode and Raids – The new Story Mode will be introduced to allow players to experience raids’ narrative content without needing to master the gameplay mechanics. This is aimed at players who are more interested in the story than raids.
  • Early Access – The early access period is designed to provide players with a head start on leveling but it doesn’t give a significant competitive advantage.
  • Mythic+ – The devs would like to add older dungeons like those from Catalysm in the M+ rotation. The effort would require significant updates to these dungeons to ensure they meet today’s standards.
  • Dev Communication – The team is exploring ways to improve communication with players, possibly expanding their use of platforms like X (Twitter). They aim to be more transparent and active in their communication without overwhelming players with too many sources of information.
  • Collection UI Updates – The team would like to implement built-in tracking for collectors, so they don’t need to rely on third-party addons.
  • Hero Talents – Offer players the flexibility to choose mechanics to suit their playstyle without committing to specific narrative content.
  • Delves – Delves will continue to be an important part of the game, with new delves and companions introduced each season. The Delver’s Journey is a seasonal activity with rewards for all players, regardless of the difficulty level they choose.
  • MoP Remix – The team’s evaluating the lessons learned from MoP Remix and is planning more content in this area, potentially tied to anniversary celebrations!
