2-Shot Raid Boss Kill Insanity: 700 Million HP, 500 Million Damage Hit, 6 Hours of Setup and 100+ Hours of Attempts

We’re back to shenanigans! Venn has truly taken over Rextroy’s mantle with this one. He found a very specific interaction (that does NOT involve critters)to two-hit a raid boss!

TLDR Version

Venn used a trinket to stack up his HP totals to crazy levels by staying in combat with a target dummy for over 6 hours. That 700 million HP was needed to be above raid boss HP so Monk’s Touch of Death would do damage equal to the player’s HP. The catch was that sustaining combat constantly during that time was very hard, and there were many interruptions and resets at the 4-6 hour mark, making the whole endeavor take over 100 hours. In the end Venn took down three bosses with only 2 uses of Touch of Death each (as there was a damage cap to the ability)!

How Much Time Did It Take?

If you were thinking of maybe pulling this one off yourself, or perhaps thinking what an exploit this is and how can Blizzard allow it… perhaps read on, as this is DEFINITELY not worth it on any level. To pull this off Venn spent over 100 hours perfecting the method and getting it done, as it has a very low margin of error. Each potentially successful attempt took 6 hours to set up, and there were over 40 failures before the kill. Most of those 40 were 4-6 hour-long ones as well. And the kicker? He had to be at his computer for the full duration. That’s some serious dedication.

The Ultimate Touch of Death

The Monk’s Touch of Death iconTouch of Death deals damage to the target equal to the character’s hit points. Although, as it turns out, it actually has a limit as to how much damage it can do. Venn found this little tidbit out after getting his health up to 700 million. It seems that the ability is capped at “only” 500 million damage! This is why the initial plan to 1-shot a boss ended up at a 2-shot, but as Venn mentions, two Monks could instantly take down the boss. That is, if there was another Monk insane enough to spend over a hundred hours trying to get it done…

But the basics are simple, get more HP than the boss you want to kill so Touch of Death can do your HP’s worth of damage (or rather the 500 mil cap) and that’s it! Simple, right?

700 Million to 20 Billion HP

Now we’re on to the actual method itself. Again this technically is an exploit, but it’s a VERY bad one, as no one in their right mind would repeat it. The bosses killed were from the anniversary Blackrock Depths raid on Normal difficulty, and there’s a very specific reason for that. The bosses are all under 700 million HP, which is why Venn aimed for that amount, but it could have gone even higher.

When we take the same method Venn did and extrapolate it a little further, we could get around 1.7 billion HP per day. If we avoid the daily router reset a lot of us are subject to, this could theoretically last for the entire weekly reset! You’d need a LOT of luck avoiding untimely disconnects or early maintenance, however. If we did that the whole week, we’d come out at 21.7 billion HP. That’s around three times of Queen Ansurek’s health on Mythic. Of course, the Touch of Death damage max would still be only 500 million, but who wouldn’t want 20 billion health?

Stop Stalling, What’s the Actual Method?

Well, if you have a whole lot of time, and REALLY want to 2-shot BRD bosses, here it is. It’s actually pretty simple. It’s all based on the Foul Behemoth's Chelicera iconFoul Behemoth’s Chelicera trinket from Nerub’ar Palace. By using a target dummy and never EVER leaving combat, its overheal can stack up your health infinitely. It’s very, VERY slow going, however, even with two Priests passively helping you out. The trinket’s healing scales with Versatility and Crit, so Venn stacked those up nicely to get to that insane HP number faster. To this end, Venn used the Ovinaxx trinket, which gives you a lot of your highest secondary stat, but you also have to keep moving. So now Venn also had to constantly move away from the training dummy to get it all working in a humane amount of time.

A 100+ Hour Journey

Now, “humane amount of time” is very relative. So, with all this set up, it would take Venn around 6 hours to get his HP to 700 million, which is the number needed to exceed the raid boss HP to then be able to damage them with Touch of Death. Except there’s ANOTHER catch or two. Or three.

So, first of all, for the ENTIRETY of the 100+ hours, Venn had to be present at his computer. Why? Well, Stormwind’s phasing sometimes kicks in, which momentarily stops your character from attacking. You have a tiny around 2-second window to remain in combat, or the trinket will proc the overshield and return your HP to normal. And so Venn had to babysit his Monk in case he stopped attacking the dummy.

Problems 2 and 3 were even worse, and this is where the stacking hours come in. As we mentioned above, you have to maintain combat at all times. So, ANY disconnect, ANY significant lag and it all gets reset. Additionally, there’s a reason Blackrock Depths was chosen. Since you can’t drop combat, you can’t go into actual raids, but BRD is flagged as a regular instance! So you teleport to the instance, and then pray. If the loading screen is even slightly too long, if you lag only a second after you zone in, you will miss the window and loose all that 6-hours’ worth of HP.

All of the above caused Venn to have to retry over 40 times! Each try was between 1 and 6 hours, with most being 4-6, adding up to over 100 spent for those three 2-shot boss kills.

Congratulations and Can’t Wait for More!

Venn is fast becoming a star in the solo world, with some truly impressive kills. He now has both “proper” non-creative-use-of-game- mechanics kills and the wackier ones. Here are some of them:
