Tides of Annihilation Gwendolyn

Tides of Annihilation’s Giant Boss Fights Are Giving Players FF16 Vibes

Even without a release date yet, Tides of Annihilation is still one of the most talked-about upcoming action games on social media since it was first revealed. And thanks to some impressive new gameplay shared this week, things are getting out of hand now!

As a reminder, Tides of Annihilation is a fantasy action-adventure from Eclipse Glow Games inspired by Arthurian legends. You play as Gwendolyn, the only survivor of an otherworldly invasion that destroyed London as we know it. The setting is a mix between modern London and mythical Avalon. You follow her on her quest to find the Holy Grail, save her family, restore the world, and take vengeance on the demi-gods of Avalon.

The new gameplay is pretty cool, and it led people to make crazy comparisons with other games:

Huge Boss Fights and FF16 Vibes

One of the biggest things players noticed immediately was the scale of the combat.

The new gameplay shows what appears to be a huge boss encounter with gigantic titan enemies, giving off strong Shadow of the Colossus energy mixed with the huge Eikon/God fights from Final Fantasy 16 or even Final Fantasy 15.

Combat itself looks much faster and more aggressive than many recent fantasy action games. The gameplay includes:

  • Fast dodge mechanics
  • Sword combos
  • Magic abilities
  • Parries and counters
  • Large cinematic attacks
  • Spectral knight summons fighting alongside the player

A lot of people are indeed comparing it directly to Final Fantasy 16, God of War, and even Lost Soul Aside.

“This is deadass FF16,” someone wrote under the gameplay clip.

Others called it “FF16-2”, some said it looks like “what God of War could look like with modern fantasy anime energy.”

Not Everyone Wants Another Soulslike

In the middle of all the hype, many reactions focused on the fact that Tides of Annihilation does not seem to be a Soulslike at all, and more like a fast-paced action game. And players are really hoping they are right on this. Soulslikes have been pushed forward a little bit too much over the past few years, and players are simply tired of it. They never really change, and it is just not interesting anymore on its own.

One of the most liked comments simply said: “Finally, action games can be fun again instead of being another soulslike.”

That seems to be part of why the gameplay video is getting so much attention. The game looks more focused on amazing cinematic and technical combat rather than extremely punishing gameplay.

Of course, not everyone is completely convinced yet. Some players worry the game could end up struggling technically because of how ambitious the visuals and size already look. Others feel the combat still looks a little too familiar compared to recent action RPGs.

The mix of modern environments, fantasy creatures, giant boss fights, and cinematic action is already making the game stand out visually, even if Eclipse Glow Games has not yet announced a release window. But judging from the reactions to the new gameplay, players are definitely ready to see more.

“I NEED IT NOW,” one person commented under the video, and we can only agree to this statement!

We might not have to wait that long, because they also recently announced that the first hands-on event will arrive this summer, so keep your eyes open for more!
