With PlayStation’s next State of Play happening on June 2, the rumors are already going completely out of control. Literally.
Sony officially confirmed that the showcase will run for over 60 minutes and feature updates, reveals, and gameplay from studios around the world, with Marvel’s Wolverine opening the show. But according to multiple insiders, PlayStation may also be preparing at least one “Blockbuster” surprise announcement.
Of course, keep in mind that this is the usual “someone inside said”, “no one broke the silence”… it might just be another click-baity Tweet. But, at the same time, it does make a little bit of sense when you take into account the fact that this State of Play will also be broadcast live in the Alamo Drafthouse in the US. Why would Sony go this far if nothing huge was being announced?
The leaks claimed that the show could include a “blockbuster-level reveal” and even called it “a defining moment of this generation,” but of course, they stopped short of revealing what the announcement really is.
As usual with pre-show rumors, it is impossible to know how legitimate these claims really are for now.
Naughty Dog Is at the Center of Most Speculation

However, if we look at the speculations, right now, most of it is focused on Naughty Dog.
A lot of people have noticed the studio has been unusually active recently, with subtle The Last of Us-related teases on social media, especially around a possible Last of Us 3, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has also gone quiet for a long time after its original reveal.

if you take all this together, it could mean that Sony is finally preparing:
- A new look at Intergalactic
- A proper reveal for The Last of Us Part 3
- Or at least some kind of big Naughty Dog announcement
There are also theories that Santa Monica Studio could appear with something related to God of War, but there is currently far less evidence supporting that idea.
It could also just be another main Sony exclusive surprise game. It is really hard to know at this point.
Expectations Are Getting Out of Hand
The timing of this State of Play is also important because it happens right before the Summer Game Fest season fully kicks off. Basically, Sony will be starting the festivities, and that means a lot is expected. Many players expect Sony to bring at least one big first-party reveal to compete for attention during a very crowded month for gaming announcements.
Of course, expectations before PlayStation showcases tend to go out of hand every single time, and not every rumor ends up being real. Most of the time, the shows are pretty disappointing in the end.
Still, with Sony promising a long presentation and insiders suddenly teasing bigger things, they are clearly preparing for something bigger than a standard small showcase.
Now we just have to wait until June 2 to find out if the rumors were actually pointing at something real.
