Players Won’t Get Shared Mob Tagging in WoW: Forever, but Blizzard Has a Plan

As players continue to flood the Beta servers of World of Warcraft: Forever, Classic and Retail players alike are discussing features that they like and others that they want Blizzard to add. While WoW: Forever does include many quality-of-life improvements present in Retail, the developers have confirmed that shared mob tagging will not be coming to WoW: Forever.

Yep, this. This is one of those things that we simply must hold the line on. I think there are other things we can do to help alleviate some frustration here but shared tagging is not it.

It’s hard to see the value in something like this when you are frustrated in the moment but it is extremely important to our social pillar to maintain some of this friction.

When responding to concerns that forcing players to group up may not actually contribute to a feeling of community, WoW Classic Developer Josh Greenfield explained how the new Recent Allies feature works in WoW: Forever. With this new feature, players will naturally run into the same players day-after-day, which the team hopes will help create familiarity and the feeling of playing on a smaller server.

I think the key part you may be missing in this assessment is the recent allies feature. Yep, that first interaction is probably you not talking too much.

Then, tomorrow, you are questing in another zone and you see that same person and they have a different colored name, and you are like “oh yeah I grouped with that guy yesterday” and then when you are on the same quest again, that friction is slightly decreased and you invite them again. Maybe this time, you talk to each other. The more this happens, the more bonds you form.

The systems in wow forever don’t exist in a vacuum. They are meant to overlap and enable the types of interactions that make MMOs the greatest genre of game ever.

Totally respect your opinion if you just aren’t looking to make friends, but these decisions are purposeful and that pro-social environment is the game we are trying to make.
