FFXIV Mobile Permanently Ceases Operations, What’s Next?

FFXIV: Crystal World, also known as FFXIV Mobile, has permanently ended service as of yesterday. Launched in June 2025 in China, FFXIV Mobile was poised to offer a mobile experience of “A Realm Reborn.” However, shortly after its first anniversary, Square Enix and Tencent announced they were ending the Chinese licensing agreement. In the same announcement, the companies equally cancelled the global version’s development entirely.

“To everyone who has journeyed with us until now, we sincerely apologize that we must end this service without being able to fully live up to your expectations. At the same time, we wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have supported us along the way,” said Square Enix and Tencent in the statement.

FFXIV Mobile players should expect their account data, character information, and other related data to be deleted at an unspecified date in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Law, “except as otherwise required by laws and regulations, or otherwise agreed in the agreement between Tencent and users,” according to the statement.

What’s Next for Final Fantasy?

A team of various races from Final Fantasy XI

Shutting down FFXIV Mobile won’t affect FFXIV or the Final Fantasy series as a whole much. The core version of Final Fantasy XIV launched on the Nintendo Switch 2 in August to positive reception, with cross-play available with players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

Evercold, the next FFXIV expansion, is on the horizon and will arrive in January 2027. Two new jobs, Bastion and an unnamed Physical Ranged DPS, will make their debut, along with many other updates. If you’ve been keeping up with the Fan Festivals this year, you’ll know the newest job will be revealed soon in October. 👀

Final Fantasy XI, the franchise’s other MMORPG, gave its free trial a boost starting, well, today! FFXI players, who had to worry about a 14-day play time limit, can now play for as long as they desire. They can also level up their characters to Level 75 instead of Level 50. And finally, FFXI players who had an old free trial account that hit the time limit can play on it again.

If you’re a fan of the classic Final Fantasy games, you might want to check out Final Fantasy Resonance, the first HD-2D title in the series. The game releases on October 22 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Though if you don’t like waiting, the free demo is available to play right now — and unlike FFXIV Mobile, it’ll be on platforms for a long while.
