While WoW Forever is still in the Beta stage, Blizzard are already not only changing things up before launch, but also planning out additional changes after it. The visual fidelity of models has been a big topic recently. Straying too far from Classic is an issue with players. Blizzard are addressing this in several ways, starting with adjustments to the current Forever Skyborne Druid forms. There are also changes coming post-launch, specifically to address the jarring HD Skyborne character models. They are clashing with the standard-definition models and world. This will be changed in early 2027, with SD models coming for both the new race and its Druid forms!
The World of Warcraft development team began our journey into World of Warcraft: Forever with ambitions that grew and evolved over time. Our aim has always been to uphold the original WoW era aesthetic, while giving players more choice in how they experience Azeroth.
Over the course of development, we have been aligning on the right range of fidelity and what feels like it belongs in the WoW: Forever world and what does not. The team has learned much in the process, and that will continue to strengthen more with future content.
Along the way, there were some ideas the team wanted to explore that ultimately didn’t quite meet the consistency and cohesion we are aiming for. To align with our goals better, we are taking aim at updating some of those visuals for the future. Here is one example of how we are revisiting the High Definition (HD) Skyborne Druid forms.
We removed a bit of the softness, added more detailed fur textures, and adjusted the color saturation. The Skyborne are from an exotic environment, and their Druid forms reflect that, but we don’t want that to be dissonant with the visual language of other creatures in the world.
Skyborne Standard Definition (SD) Player Character Update
In choosing to offer an SD or HD toggle for player characters, we focused on the pre-existing races from original World of Warcraft since many people have an attachment to those models. However, we have heard feedback that the HD Skyborne can be jarring by contrast when placed in the same world as the SD models and world, and we agree.
So, for those of us that prefer the look of SD models and want more choice, Skyborne player characters (and yes SD Druid forms) are in development and arriving early 2027. We look forward to sharing more information closer to that date. For now, here is an early work in progress image.
This is just the start of our journey, and the whole team is thrilled with the reception for World of Warcraft: Forever. As we continue refining this vision together, we look forward to what lies ahead—for the Horde! For the Alliance! Forever!
