Blizzard Delays Warcraft 3’s Visual Overhaul After Backlash Over Campaign Progress

Almost a month ago, Blizzard surprised Warcraft 3 fans at BlizzCon with Forsaken Kingdom, a new expansion for one of its most beloved and influential games. Released immediately after the announcement, it marked the game’s first major expansion since The Frozen Throne, which arrived 23 years earlier.

Alongside a brand-new campaign, the release introduced a new Tavern hero and an HD graphics option designed to stay more faithful to the original game’s classic unit models. We covered the expansion and its additions in more detail in our earlier article.

Definitive Edition: Live vs. PTR Comparison – by Daily Warcraft Reforged

Since the release, Blizzard has been closely following community feedback. While fans welcomed the first new campaign in decades, the new Definitive Edition graphics drew criticism in several areas.

Common complaints focused on terrain, certain unit animations, unit sizes, and the visual effects of spells and projectiles. Patch 3.0.1 aimed to address these concerns with a range of changes designed to bring the new visuals closer to the original game’s look and feel.

Blizzard made the patch available on the PTR for several weeks, giving players time to test the changes and provide further feedback. Two days ago, patch 3.0.1 went live, bringing those improvements to the wider community.

However, the launch quickly drew backlash because the update made existing campaign saves incompatible. Although Blizzard had warned players several weeks earlier, the change still caught many by surprise. In response, the developers rolled Warcraft 3 back to the previous version, giving players more time to finish their ongoing campaigns before the update returns.

This time, Blizzard has also added a notice to the Battle.net launcher highlighting the new release date and warning about save compatibility, making the information harder to miss.

Patch 3.0.1 is now scheduled to launch again on October 19. We’ll take a closer look at its improvements when it returns.
