Single Target Healing, Better Seal Twisting, More Thread and Survivability: WoW Forever Class Deep Dive, Paladin

We have a new deep dive post, but this time it’s just one class featured instead of the two so far! Paladins definitely take center stage, as one of the most popular classes out there, and get a lot of attention. Or, you know, it’s the final entry in the deep dive series, and it’s an odd number of classes.

Each Paladin spec is getting new and improved toys. Holy gets more single-target healing, group support, and even spell damage! Protection might actually become a viable tank with more threat, mana, and survival options. Retribution adds some Holy damage to weapon attacks, easier Seal Twisting, and new ways to sustain Judgements. We get a full overview of each spec’s new and changed talents, which have been moved to baseline abilities, and which have been removed. We also get to see baseline abilities for the class overall.

There’s even an overview and short description of how each spec works in WoW Forever at the end.

Our class deep dive series concludes with developer insights into Paladins in World of Warcraft: Forever. In this final installment, we’re looking at how the class is evolving through updates that build on its defining strengths: wielding Holy power, supporting allies, and standing firm against powerful foes.

Paladins remain rooted in their unique Seal and Judgement system, with new abilities and revised talents creating more room to shape how each specialization plays. Holy gains new tools for single-target healing, group support, and spell-focused damage; Protection receives stronger threat, mana, and survival options; and Retribution gains new ways to sustain Judgements, blend weapon attacks with Holy damage, and pursue a more approachable form of Seal Twisting.

Talents become available starting at level 10 and continue using a familiar structure, including one-point gold medal talents at 11, 21, and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point gold medal. To change your talents, including Legacy talents, visit a class trainer in one of the major cities. Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40.

Please note that class abilities and talents may continue to evolve throughout the beta test and are subject to additional changes.

Paladin: Champions of the Light

Baseline Abilities

  • Holy Strike: (New ability is learned at level 6.) Holy Strike deals instant Holy damage to the target based on 50% of equipped weapon damage plus a bonus that increases with each new rank.
  • Judgement: This ability no longer consumes the Paladin’s active Seal.
  • Salvation: This ability is no longer a Blessing, so a Paladin can now have a Blessing on the target as well as Salvation. The version of this spell designed for raids that targets an entire class is now called Mass Salvation.
    • Note: This change is not yet live and is going into a future beta build.
  • Righteous Fury: The threat bonus from this ability has been reduced.
Protection Paladins have access to more Holy damage than in Classic Era, so this multiplier does not need to be as high.
  • Seal of Fury: (New seal learned at level 10.) This seal has 3 components. It causes each of the Paladin’s melee swings to deal bonus Holy damage. That bonus Holy damage is constant per swing, unlike Seal of Righteousness, so this favors using a fast weapon while tanking.
Based on this bonus Holy damage, the Paladin gains an absorption shield equal to 50% of the damage. This absorption shield does not stack from multiple applications.
Finally, the Judgement effect from this Seal deals additional Holy damage and taunts the target to attack the Paladin. Because this taunt is delivered via Judgement, it has a uniquely longer 10-yard range; (Druid) Growl and (Warrior) Taunt have only a 5-yard range. This gives the Paladin a unique ability to “reach” enemies farther away than other tanks can.
  • Fire Resistance Aura, Frost Resistance Aura, and Shadow Resistance Aura: These auras now affect all raid members within 30 yards
  • Consecration: This ability is now learned by all Paladins at level 20, instead of being a Holy talent. It has also been redesigned to prevent it from being too strong of a tanking tool. It now deals moderate damage to the first 4 enemies to enter it, and very low damage to all other enemies. This allows the Paladin to reliably generate threat on only 4 targets at a time, keeping them at parity with Warriors’ Thunderclap ability.
This limitation is critical to maintaining the combat feel of Classic Era, and not sliding into the more AoE-focused gameplay found in early WoW expansions.
  • Lay on Hands: Cooldown reduced to 20 minutes from 1 hour.
  • Seal Twisting: This functionality no longer exists baseline like it did in Classic Era and Classic Anniversary.
In World of Warcraft: Forever, we have brought in a new form of Seal Twisting via the Retribution 31-point gold medal talent Twist of Light. This capstone talent retains the engaging gameplay of swapping between multiple Seals while making it more intuitive and less stringent on timing windows. This allows the Paladin to engage in Seal Twisting while also having the flexibility to use their broad support kit more freely. Additionally, the Holy paladin gold medal talent Holy Shock has been strategically placed as an alternative to Twist of Light, allowing for players to opt out of Seal Twisting gameplay for a hybrid build utilizing Holy talents.

Holy talents

  • Healing Light: Moved from row 3 up to row 2. Now also increases Holy Shock healing.
  • Spiritual Focus: Now also applies to Light’s Vigil. Total talent cost reduced to 2 points from 5 points.
  • Improved Seals: (Formerly Improved (only)Seal of Righteousness.) Now affects damage from all Seals and Judgements. Total talent cost reduced to 3 points from 5 points.
  • Unyielding Faith: Moved from row 3 up to row 2. Now reduces the duration of Fear and Disorient effects instead of increasing chance to resist them.
  •  Voice of Truth: (New 11-point gold medal talent that grants a new ability.) Voice of Truth grants immunity to Silence and Interrupt for 6 seconds, with a 3-minute cooldown.
  • Reverence: (New row 3 talent) Grants the Paladin up to 30% of their mana regeneration from Spirit while casting.
  • Purifying Power: (New row 3 talent) Reduces the mana cost of Cleanse and Purify by up to 20% and reduces the cooldown on Exorcism and Holy Wrath by up to 33%.
The Seal mana cost reduction helps with affording casting new Seals between melee swings to maximize damage. However, it will be challenging to afford the mana to sustain maximum use indefinitely. Utilizing abilities like Judgement of Wisdom and the Reverence Holy talent can help with sustaining this powerful effect
  • Infusion of Light: (New row 4 talent.) Critical hits with Holy Shock and Flash of Light reduce the cast time of your next Holy Light by up to 1 second.
In original World of Warcraft, Holy Paladins could end up relying heavily on repeatedly casting Flash of Light. This talent encourages greater healing variety while preserving their core strength in consistent single-target healing.
  • Illumination: (Requires Reverence.) This talent can now also be triggered by Light’s Vigil.
In addition, it was historically too strong of an effect and scaled out of control, so the mana refund it grants has been reduced to 50% of the base cost of the affected healing spell.
  • Divine Favor: Now the 16-point gold medal talent instead of the 21-point gold medal talent.
  • Divine Precision: (New row 5 talent. Requires Holy Shock.) This talent grants up to 18% increased hit chance with Holy spells.
We do not plan to include itemization for Hit chance on Plate healing gear, so this talent provides it instead. It further supports the possibility of the “Shock-adin” Paladin playstyle using Holy talents and gear.
  • Holy Shock: This ability has moved from the 31-point gold medal talent to the 21-point gold medal. Its cooldown has been reduced to 10 seconds from 30 seconds.
Moving Holy Shock earlier in the tree creates more flexibility for hybrid Shockadin builds while strengthening Holy Paladins’ core healing role. It also opens space for deeper talents such as Light’s Vigil, which builds on Holy Shock to provide new group-healing options without diminishing the specialization’s strength in single-target healing.
  • Consecrated Ground: This new row 5 talent causes your Holy spells to deal up to 10% increased damage to the first 4 enemies to enter your active Consecration.
  • Holy Power: Now increases the critical strike chance of Holy Shock and Holy Strike by up to 15%, while continuing to increase the critical strike chance of all other spells by up to 5%.
  • Light’s Vigil: (Requires Holy Shock.) This new 31-point gold medal talent grants a new versatile ability to Holy Paladins. Light’s Vigil has a 1.5-second cast time, 30-second duration, and 6-second cooldown, and can be used on both allies and enemies. Regardless of which, the next Holy Shock cast on that target will not trigger its cooldown. If it is an enemy, they will take additional Holy damage and 75% of the mana cost of Light’s Vigil will be refunded. If it is an ally, every member of that ally’s party will be instantly healed for a moderate amount. Light’s Vigil can be active on only one friendly player per party.
This ability further helps the “Shockadin” build while also providing a new tool for healing.
When used proactively, a Holy Paladin can set up Light’s Vigil on several different parties in a raid group. And then when a large damage event happens to the entire raid, use Holy Shock back-to-back to heal the entire raid quickly.
But it is more difficult to use reactively, as significant setup is required.

Altered talents: Improved Lay on Hands (cooldown reduced baseline)
Talents Moved to Baseline: Consecration (now baseline), Improved Blessing of Wisdom (now baseline), Lasting Judgement (now baseline)

Protection

  • Toughness: Moved from row 2 up to row 1.
  • Redoubt: (Redesigned.) This talent no longer requires the Paladin to be hit with a critical strike; it now grants a 10% chance when hit to gain increased Block Chance. The increase to Block Chance is now up to 20% instead of 30%.
  • Precision: Now increases chance for all spells and attacks to hit instead of just melee weapon attacks.
By helping key abilities—including the taunt from Seal of Fury’s Judgement—land more reliably, this talent makes Protection Paladin tanking smoother and more approachable.
  • Anticipation: Moved from row 3 to row 2. Maximum increase to Defense doubled to 20 Defense, was 10 Defense.
  • Improved Seal of Fury: (New 11-point gold medal talent.) This talent improves the new tanking Seal to return mana to the Paladin each time one of Seal of Fury’s absorption shields is fully consumed.
This mana increase is larger when the attacker is a higher level than the Paladin, such as when tanking more difficult content, including raid bosses.
  • Improved Righteous Fury: No longer increase threat from Righteous Fury. Instead, grants up to 6% reduced damage taken while Righteous Fury is active.
  • Shield Specialization: Now also causes your blocks to have up to 100% chance to restore 6% of your maximum mana. May only occur once every 3 seconds.
  • Sacred Duty: (New row 3 talent.) Increases total Stamina by up to 4% and reduces the cooldown on Divine Shield, Divine Protection, and Templar’s Bulwark by up to 1 minute.
  • Swift Judgement: (New ability.) New 16-point gold medal talent. No mana cost, 1 minute cooldown. Instantly finishes the remaining cooldown on your Judgement ability and reduces the mana cost of your next Judgement by 100%.
This new ability allows Paladin tanks flexibility to react to a resisted taunt, or even cleverly taunt multiple enemies quickly.
  • One-Handed Weapon Specialization: Moved from row 6 to row 4. Now requires only 3 talent points instead of 5 for the full effect.
  • Templar’s Bulwark: (New 21-point gold medal talent.) This is a new instant ability with a 5-minute cooldown. You gain an absorption shield equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds but applies Forbearance and cannot be used while Forbearance is active.
We felt Protection Paladins needed a useful survival cooldown like other tanks have, and this fit the bill, while also making an interesting choice as part of their Forbearance system.
  • Reckoning: Now also gains up to 40% chance to trigger after Blocking a melee attack. It can still be triggered up to 100% of the time from taking a damaging critical hit. Cannot occur more often than once every 1.5 seconds.
We wanted to make this talent useful to a tanking Paladin, who will often have reduced or no chance to be critically hit, so we added a chance from Blocking. But we don’t want to encourage tanking large numbers of enemies at once, so it cannot occur more often than once every 1.5 seconds.
We’re aware that Reckoning currently does not let players save up 4 charges, and the triggered extra attacks can interrupt current auto-attack swing timers. We plan to fix these issues in an upcoming patch.
  • Iron Creed: (New row 6 talent.) Increases threat generated by Holy Strike by up to 15%, and while Righteous Fury is active, Holy Strike grants up to 10% reduced damage taken for 6 seconds.
The intent of this talent is to increase the value of Holy Strike for both for threat generation and survival. A well-timed Holy Strike can help keep the Paladin alive at a critical moment in an encounter. And used rotationally, makes the Paladin a little bit more survivable on average.
  • Holy Shield: Now has Templar’s Bulwark as its pre-requisite.

Removed talents: Blessing of Sanctuary, Improved Concentration Aura
Talents Moved to Baseline: Blessing of Kings.

Retribution

  • Deflection: Moved from row 2 up to row 1.
  • Benediction: Now reduces the cost of all instant cast spells and abilities by up to 10% instead of reducing costs on only Seals and Judgement by up to 15%.
  • Holy Conduit: (New row 2 talent.) Reduces the mana cost of Consecration, Holy Wrath, and Exorcism by up to 40%.
  • Conviction: Moved from row 3 up to row 2. Tooltip wording updated to clarify that it benefits melee attacks specifically.
  • Vindication: (Redesigned.) Now grants your damaging melee attacks a chance to reduce the target’s Attack Power, and to increase your own Attack Power by up to 3% for 30 seconds.
The Attack Power reduction is tuned by level to remain close to the reduction from Demoralizing Shout or Demoralizing Roar. Increasing the Paladin’s own Attack Power also ensures Vindication remains valuable against enemies that rely less on Attack Power, such as casters, or when the Paladin is not receiving most of the incoming damage.
  • Sanctified Judgement: (New row 3 talent.) Grants your Judgement up to 100% chance to refund up to 60% of the cost of the judged Seal.
  • Pursuit of Justice: The benefit of this talent was increased from a maximum of 8% movement speed to 15% movement speed, for the same number of talent points.
  • Eye for an Eye: Moved from row 4 down to row 5. Now works against all critical strikes, not just spells, but damage reflected is now up to 10% of the damage taken, down from 30%.
  • Sacred Arbiter: New 16-point gold medal talent. Increases Holy Strike damage by 20% and causes it to refresh all Judgement effects on the target, even those from other Paladins.
This talent gives Retribution talents a unique ability to maintain Judgements first cast by other Paladins, increasing the total utility Paladins bring to a raid as a group. Being able to maintain Judgement of Wisdom, Judgement of Light, and Judgement of Crusader at the same time adds significant utility to any party or raid.
  • Vengeance: (Requires Sanctified Judgement) Redesigned and moved from row 6 up to row 5. Now lasts 30 seconds and increases damage by up to 3% per stack for a maximum of 3 stacks (so total of 9% damage increase). Previously granted up to 15% damage increase for 8 seconds, but was unreliable and would fall off frequently.
This change makes Retribution Paladin damage a bit more consistent.
  • Repentance: Now the 21-point gold medal talent instead of the 31-point gold medal talent.
  • Champion of the Light: (New row 6 talent.) Increases your spell damage by up to 30% of your Intellect.
This talent strengthens Retribution’s Holy damage output, leaning further into the specialization’s identity as a weapon-wielding champion of the Light. It initially granted 100% of the Paladin’s Intellect as spell damage during the beta, but we reduced that value to 60% and limited the effect to damage to keep it from becoming too strong for Holy Paladins who give up many Holy talents to go overly deep into Retribution.
  • Instrument of the Law: (New row 6 talent.) Reduces the cast time of Holy Wrath by up to 1 second (making it instant) and reduces all Threat you generate by 20% while Righteous Fury is not active.
This talent leans into the Paladin’s strength against Demons and Undead while making threat easier to manage when dealing damage. Because the threat reduction applies only while Righteous Fury is inactive, Retribution Paladins can still activate Righteous Fury when they need to help off-tank.
  • Twist of Light: (New 31-point gold medal talent.) Reduces the mana cost of Seal spells by 20% and causes your damage-dealing Seals to leave an Echo when they are replaced. That Echo causes your next melee attack to gain the benefit of the replaced Seal, as well as any benefit of the currently active Seal.
The Seal mana cost reduction helps with affording casting new Seals between melee swings to maximize damage. However, it will be challenging to afford the mana to sustain maximum use indefinitely. Utilizing abilities like Judgement of Wisdom and the Reverence Holy talent can help with sustaining this powerful effect.

Altered talents: Improved Seal of the Crusader (Judgement bonus made baseline)
Removed Talents: Improved Retribution Aura, Sanctity Aura

Paladins remain a distinct class with their own unique mechanics. Theyfeature the Seal and Judgement system, which our new talents play into and strengthen. They are very strong against Undead and Demons but have limited ranged capabilities. You can increase their range with Holy talents, but not to the extent found on our other mana users. They have no interrupt and no way to slow enemy movement. After all these changes, they can be highly effective tanks, competitive damage dealers, and the strongest single-target healers in the game.

Holy Paladins excel at sustaining heals on a single target with Flash of Light. Healing an entire party at once requires more planning, but new talents give them tools to step into that role when needed, making them viable healers across all forms of group play. Protection gains strong cooldown abilities with Swift Judgement and Templar’s Bulwark that ties directly to their iconic Seal, Judgement, and Forebearance systems, while baseline Consecration and talents like Iron Creed give them more consistent control of the battlefield. Retribution Paladins remain strong damage dealers with increased consistency and additional Holy power, bring significant group utility via talents like Sacred Arbiter maintaining judgements, and enjoy greater build flexibility to seal twist with Twist of Light or focus on Holy damage by hybridizing into Holy Shock. Overall, Paladins remain a strong class with distinct strengths and tradeoffs that preserve their unique identity, while bringing powerful flexibility and utility to every adventure.

As the World of Warcraft: Forever beta nears its end and the team prepares for the worldwide launch on November 4th, we’ll continue listening to your feedback and refining the Paladin alongside the rest of the classes coming your way. We look forward to seeing how you wield the Light, explore these new abilities and talents, and help shape what comes next.
