HoYoverse announced a significant quality-of-life buff for Sanctifying Elixir, one of Genshin Impact’s rarest and most powerful artifact-customization tools. Starting in Version 5.5, this item will guarantee stronger substat upgrades and potentially reduce the grind for good artifacts.
What’s Changing?
Currently, the Sanctifying Elixir lets players manually select an artifact’s main stat and 2 substats. However, the overall leveling process to 20 still relies on RNG to determine how many times substats are upgraded. This can completely ruin an artifact which otherwise could have been great.
The recent developer discussion showed the following information:
- Using the Sanctifying Elixir will guarantee at least 2 substat upgrades by the time the artifact reaches Level 20.
- This applies only to artifacts customized with the elixir after the update.

One reddit user, /u/Equivalent-Many-2175 provided a detailed model of how exactly this can impact your substat rolls for CRIT Rate and DMG.
Unfortunately, the final result is that you’re still going to get many unlucky artifacts. Simply pray to RNG and hope you roll well but this system will provide players with decent artifacts. This can be great for characters where you do not plan on investing as heavily or simply want to have them in a playable state faster.
