New DLC Coming to Castle Crashers

Castle Crashers Adds Custom Character DLC 17 Years Later

Seventeen years after its initial release on the Xbox Live Arcade, Castle Crashers is getting new DLC.

The Steam-exclusive update, Painter Boss Paradise, will cost $3.99 USD and is planned for an August 6th release. The DLC will allow players to create custom characters using an editable template to upload into the game. It also includes a new playable character, Paint Junior.

Custom Character Creation Explained

Painter Boss Paradise provides a template that can be dropped into the photo-editing software of your choice. Once there, it’s a simple matter of drawing new sprites which can then be loaded into the game. The custom creation can be played as a unique character or replace an existing Castle Crashers character. There will also be a test room where players can see their OC (original crasher) in action. Finally, there’s an option to upload the creation to the Steam Workshop where others can download it.

Steam-Exclusive Features and Redrawn Art

As it is built around Steam, it appears the DLC will be exclusive to the platform. In addition, the DLC features exhaustive redraws of all existing characters and weapons in the game. If you don’t like the new aesthetic, worry not. Players can toggle between the new and old art styles from the main menu. It’s a heartwarming amount of effort for a game that came out when the writer was in middle school. Here’s hoping that sentence aged some of you out there as well.

Castle Crashers and The Behemoth Today

Castle Crashers was first released in 2008 by studio The Behemoth. Founded in 2003, the studio has long been producing side-scrolling, cartoony games like Alien Hominid, Battleblock Theater, and last year’s Behemoth. The company has been making updates to all of their previous releases, and is currently working on a brand new game, though details are scant for now.
