Clair Obscur’s Free Thank You Update Is No Joke

Revealed during The Game Awards and released as a free DLC, Clair Obscur’s Thank You Update is Sandfall Interactive’s way of celebrating the game’s massive success with 9 wins out of 12 nominations, no less.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – Thank You Update Trailer

This update adds a huge new region, dozens of new weapons and builds, a long-requested Photo Mode, and some of the hardest endgame content the game has ever seen. And judging by community reactions, it is already breaking players in half, emotionally and mechanically.

The good news is that everything here is 100% optional. The bad news is that if you do jump in, the game expects perfection.

What Is New in the Thank You Update?

New Costume for Monoco

Patch 1.5.0, officially titled the Thank You Update, is basically a full expansion disguised as a free patch. If you have been waiting for a good moment to go back to the game, now is the perfect time because it really adds a ton of playable content, such as:

  • A new playable region (possibly the largest in the game)
  • New weapons, costumes, Pictos, and Lumina abilities
  • A fully featured Photo Mode (even usable mid-fight or in cutscenes)
  • Massive quality-of-life upgrades (loadouts, retry options, performance)
  • And most importantly, new endgame bosses designed to be lethal
Chic costumes for everyone

New Region – Verso’s Draft

The heart of the update is Verso’s Drafts, a beautiful new area south of Lumière, comparable in size and density to Frozen Hearts.

Verso’s Draft Location

To access Verso’s Draft, you need to reach Act III and increase Esquie’s relationship to level 6 to unlock the diving skill. You need to dive to enter.

This zone focuses on the early drafts of a young Verso, expanding the game’s lore, and delivering the usual content that you can find in each zone:

  • Optional bosses
  • Hidden collectibles
  • New weapons and Pictos
  • Puzzle challenges like Hopscotch, Seesaws, and diving minigames
  • New bosses in the Tower, including variants of some of the hardest bosses in the game

There is also a sub-area called Root of All Evil, home to one of the update’s new bosses, Osquio.

Exploration-wise, it is dense, rewarding, and extremely fun, and that is a big contrast to the usual chaos.

Photo Mode

One of the most requested features is finally here with the Thank You Update! We are talking about a fully featured Photo Mode.

The best part of it is that you can activate it directly from the pause menu, even during combat or cutscenes, making it easy to capture dramatic moments or perfectly timed action shots. The mode includes a wide range of camera controls and visual options, letting you frame scenes exactly how you want.

Given Clair Obscur’s exceptional art direction, it is a welcome addition!

How to Survive the New Endgame

If you are jumping into the new content, you will realise very soon that the bosses are no joke! If you thought Simon was hard before, you are definitely not ready, so here is what matters most early on:

  • Dodging Is Everything
    • Many boss attacks are instant one-hit KOs. You are expected to dodge multiple attacks in a row with perfect timing. Panic rolling will get you killed.
  • Learn Before You Commit
    • Thanks to the new Forfeit Battle option, you can safely reset fights faster. Use early attempts to learn patterns instead of trying to brute-force damage.
  • Use the New Lumina Sets
    • You can now save up to 50 Lumina loadouts per character. This is huge. Build specifically for:
      • Survivability
      • AP efficiency
      • Counter-based playstyles
  • Do not Skip Verso’s Drafts
    • The new area is where you will find:
      • Some of the best new Pictos and Luminas
      • Weapons that open up entirely new builds
    • Skipping it makes the rest of the endgame much harder than it needs to be

On one side, players are calling it overwhelming, arguing that the difficulty spike is too extreme even for endgame content. On the other hand, fans of ultra-hard challenges are praising it, comparing the experience to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

The Thank You Update does not lock story progression behind impossible fights, and that is definitely a smart call. If you just want exploration, lore, Photo Mode, or new builds, you can enjoy most of the content without ever touching the hardest bosses.

But if you are looking for a true endgame challenge, the kind that demands mastery, patience, and a bit of stubbornness, this DLC absolutely delivers.
