Geralt Returns in a New Witcher 3 Expansion Coming in 2027

Almost ten years after launch, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is officially getting a new expansion!

Yes, seriously. This time, it is not a leak, it is really real, so if you have been waiting for this as we did, this will definitely make your day! After first teasing a special livestream for The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine anniversary, CD Projekt Red unexpectedly dropped an even bigger surprise today:

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past

The new expansion is currently planned for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and Geralt of Rivia is officially returning once again.

Geralt Is Going Back on the Path

According to the announcement, the expansion is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, the studio also involved in the upcoming Witcher remake project.

CD Projekt Red confirmed that Geralt will return as the main character, that the expansion includes entirely new content, and more details will arrive later this summer. The teaser itself is still extremely vague since it is really just one post on Social media, but honestly, the idea of getting a completely new Witcher 3 expansion this many years later was already enough to send everyone into full hype mode.

Especially considering many people thought Blood and Wine would permanently close the book on Geralt’s story.

Apparently not.

The Blood and Wine Anniversary Stream Suddenly Became Much Bigger

What makes this even funnier is that just yesterday, CD Projekt Red only announced a special anniversary stream for The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.

The livestream is scheduled for May 28 at 5 PM (17h) CEST and was originally presented as a nostalgic return to Toussaint with developers returning once more to the land of knights, vineyards, and vampires!

Now, after today’s reveal, fans are obviously expecting far more than just nostalgia. The devs also confirmed that they originally planned to make the Songs of the Past DLC reveal during the stream tomorrow, but they “found something we didn’t yet expect on RED Launcher”.

You can watch the stream on their official YouTube and Twitch.

There is now massive speculation that tomorrow’s stream could include:

  • Early expansion details
  • Story teasers
  • Gameplay previews
  • A cinematic reveal
  • Possibly even new Witcher 4 details

And knowing how huge this reveal already is, expectations are now through the roof! We are definitely super hyped about this!

System Requirements Are Also Changing

Alongside the expansion reveal, CD Projekt Red also confirmed upcoming updates to the PC system requirements for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to the studio, the new requirements are necessary to maintain compatibility and support future updates. They also want to make sure there is a stable performance going forward.

The updated requirements will become active with the game’s next update. They published an entire post with all the details about the new system requirements.

Honestly, this announcement came out of nowhere. Between a new expansion, Geralt returning, The Blood and Wine anniversary, ongoing work on The Witcher 4, the future Witcher remake, and now this… it suddenly feels like CD Projekt Red is going all-in on the franchise again, and we are all for it.

For longtime fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, seeing Geralt head back onto the Path one more time is probably one of the biggest surprises of the year so far, but we all love it!
