Nightreign Tops Charts in May 2025 Top Selling Games

Sales data from May 2025 shows Elden Ring: Nightreign topping the charts for new releases.

Despite launching on May 30th, the game blew away every other release that month in just two days. In contrast, May’s second top seller Doom: The Dark Ages, released May 15th. Nightreign caps off the incredible runaway success of Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s best-selling game of all time.

New Releases vs. Chart Veterans

The top twenty games of May featured only four new releases: Nightreign, Doom: The Dark Ages, F1 25, and Capcom Fighting Collection 2.

Some chart-toppers included recent releases like Oblivion: Remastered, while long-running titles like GTA V held on. The biggest surprise was Star Wars: Battlefront 2, which landed twelfth thanks to a May the 4th sale, and renewed interest in a third game.

Industry-Wide Trends and What’s Ahead

Beyond individual titles, total industry sales in May were up one percent year-over-year, driven by individual games and subscription services. Hardware sales in contrast were down thirteen percent, likely in anticipation of the Switch 2’s release in June. While May is positive, year to date the industry is down in sales six percent compared to last year. The Switch 2 will no doubt provide a big boost to industry sales for the summer (assuming they aren’t stolen). Still it remains to be seen whether the video game industry will pull ahead of last year’s sales numbers.
