Overwatch 2 Devs Talk Heroes, Tools, Future Seasons & More!

Overwatch 2 content creator Jay3 recently hosted an in-depth Q&A session with game director Aaron Keller and game designer Dylan Snyder, going over topics like hero balance, custom games, and long-term content plans. The developers offered plenty of insights, and even teased a few potential surprises down the line!

Favorite Heroes & Player Struggles

When asked about their favorite heroes to play, Dylan named Orisa, especially in Stadium mode, while Aaron admitted to enjoying Reinhardt.

However, he also noted that he avoids naming favorites due to former internal policies about dev bias. He jokingly confessed that he tries to play Junker Queen often, but just isn’t good with her, a moment many players can probably relate to.

Map Editor & Custom Game Tools

One major community request, a full map editor, was addressed directly. While the devs acknowledged the idea’s appeal, they explained it would require a massive investment of time and development resources. It is not something that is feasible in the near future.

That said, they are actively looking to expand custom game options, especially within the newly introduced Stadium mode. One possibility being explored is letting players set up scenarios like “1 buffed hero vs. 5 regular ones,” offering more creative sandbox gameplay. However, there is no confirmed timeline for when these tools might be added.

Group Finder: A Feature on Hold

The Group Finder tool, which helped players connect for matches, was removed due to low usage. However, the developers noted that a small, dedicated community did rely on it. While it is not currently on the roadmap, they are open to revisiting it if demand grows or the right opportunity arises.

Creator Codes Under Consideration

The idea of creator codes, a feature widely requested by content creators, is officially on the devs’ radar. They expressed support for the concept but emphasized that such a system would require coordination across multiple internal teams. Still, it is a positive sign that the conversation is happening behind the scenes.

Holiday-Themed Stadium Maps?

While not something that had been considered before, the notion of adding holiday-themed variants of Stadium maps, like Halloween or Christmas versions, got the developers’ interest during the interview. They said the idea was fun and potentially worth exploring in the future.

Excitement Around K-pop Collabs

Following the success of the LE SSERAFIM crossover, the devs were enthusiastic about the possibility of another K-pop collaboration. Dylan even joked that he is always thinking about K-pop. Although nothing official was announced, they mentioned Blackpink and Aespa as top contenders that fans (and devs) would love to see in the Overwatch universe!

Season 18 and the Future of Hero Releases

Looking ahead, Season 18 is going to be a major content milestone. Building on important changes introduced in Seasons 15 and 16, such as the Perks system, the developers hope to ramp up hero releases moving forward.

Despite the push for more frequent content, the team reassured players that new heroes will still come with the same level of depth, including unique kits, full voice acting, and integrated lore.

Reviving the Lore & Dreaming of a TV Show

With the PvE campaign no longer in active development, Overwatch’s narrative and cinematic output has slowed. The developers acknowledged this shift but emphasized that they want to bring the story back in a more focused and engaging way.

They even floated the idea of a TV series or similar large-scale project as a long-term goal, though nothing is confirmed. For now, reintroducing lore and storytelling to the game remains a priority.

Marvel Rivals & Industry Competition

When asked about potential competition from titles like Marvel Rivals, the devs were diplomatic. They said competition is ultimately good for the genre, as it fuels creativity.

They clarified that Overwatch 2’s recent features, including perks, Stadium mode, and map voting, were already in development long before Marvel Rivals was revealed. Only hero bans were moved forward slightly in the timeline to align with community expectations.

Overwatch World Cup Still in Limbo

Unfortunately, there is still no update on the Overwatch World Cup. While the developers spoke fondly of the event and its importance to the community, they could not confirm if or when it might return.

BlizzCon 2026 Confirmed

In more concrete news, the developers confirmed that BlizzCon is set to return in 2026. No additional details were shared, but the confirmation itself was enough to excite longtime fans hoping for big-stage announcements.

From gameplay tools to community features and potential media expansions, this Jay3 interview offered a rare and wide-reaching look at the current mindset behind Overwatch 2. While not every idea is ready for prime time, the devs made it clear they are listening, and they are thinking big.
