Kanto really is back!
Nintendo just confirmed that Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are coming to Nintendo Switch, and yes, it is happening very soon.
The two Game Boy Advance remakes from 2004 will be available digitally on the Nintendo eShop right after the Pokémon Presents on February 27, 2026 at 6:00 a.m. PST. Each game will cost $/€19.99, and pre-orders are already live.
Back to Kanto
If you played them back in the day, you already know the vibe. These were the upgraded remakes of the original Kanto journey, bringing back the story of Red and Blue with refreshed GBA-era visuals and a bunch of extra content.
The Switch versions keep that classic structure intact. You will explore Kanto, take on Gym Leaders, complete your Pokédex, and yes, the Sevii Islands are included, just like in the original GBA release.
Trading and battling via local communication will also be supported.
And there is more! Support for Pokémon HOME is planned, meaning you will eventually be able to transfer your Pokémon into the wider ecosystem. That is honestly a big deal for long-term collectors.
Important Language Detail
One thing to note, and this might sound unusual. These releases replicate the original launch format. That means no in-game language options. Each version is sold as a separate language SKU.
In North America, you will have separate English, French, and Spanish versions. In PAL regions, Italian and German versions will also be available.
So double-check before you hit purchase.
Japan Gets a Collector’s Bundle (And It Is Pretty Cool)
While the rest of the world gets digital releases, Japan is getting something special.
A physical collector’s bundle will be available through Pokémon Center Online in Japan, including:
- A glass Poké Ball set
- GBA replica packaging
- One game download card
- A specially designed case

The price is around 19,800 yen (around $127 USD). It does not appear to be releasing outside Japan, and that one stings a little. It really does look cool!
30 Years Later, It Still Hits
With Pokémon’s 30th anniversary coming up, this feels like a very deliberate nostalgia play, and honestly, it is a strong one. All the 90s’ kids will definitely want to replay through those!
FireRed and LeafGreen were not just remakes. For a lot of players, they were the definitive way to experience Kanto. Clean, colorful, expanded, and packed with post-game content.
If you are jumping back in after 20 years or even just playing them for the first time on Switch, this is one of those “comfort return” releases that is hard not to be excited about.
Kanto is back, and it is time to reunite with your old favorite starter!
