PS6 Portable: Budget Handheld That Could Change Gaming?

Previous leaks from Moore’s Law Is Dead suggested that Sony is working on a PlayStation 6 Portable. This is a handheld console that would be dockable, and designed to run PS4, PS5, and PS6 titles, all on the go.

Now, with all the latest rumors and information, he shared another video going over the current handheld options and how the PS6 Portable would fit into them. If all the leaks are accurate, this could be more than just a “companion device.” This console might be the true next-gen handheld that blurs the line between console and portable gaming.

Of course, keep in mind that this is all based on leaks and rumors. Nothing has been confirmed officially, so the reality could turn out very differently.

Next-Gen Power in the Palm of Your Hand

According to early leaks, the PlayStation 6 Portable will share much of the same internal architecture as the PS6, including a custom RDNA 5 GPU, a faster CPU, and a wider memory bus.

Performance-wise, the handheld is supposed to be:

  • Around 3x faster when docked than the Nintendo Switch 2
  • 3.4x faster when compared handheld-to-handheld
  • Using FSR 4/5 upscaling, far ahead of the Switch 2’s DLSS 3.1

Even in handheld mode, it is said to maintain high clock speeds for better efficiency. That is something that could push console-level performance in under 30 watts of power.

A True “Budget Console” for the Next Generation?

The rumored price points towards $399-$499. Even if this is still a seriously high price, it would make the PS6 Portable one of the most accessible ways to play next-gen titles. However, instead of being a low-powered streaming device like the PS Portal, this would be a fully capable console.

If Sony really pulls this off, the PS6 Portable could act as both a budget entry point into the PS6 ecosystem and a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch 2 and high-end PC handhelds like the ROG Ally X or Steam Deck 2.

Windows vs. Console OS: The Real Battle

Leakers also highlight a key advantage that is optimization. Windows-based handhelds (like the Ally X) are powerful but slower to boot. They also often come with inconsistent frame pacing, and poor battery life.

Sony’s dedicated console OS could allow the PS6 Portable to outperform PC handhelds at lower power ratings, offering faster load times, smoother gameplay, and longer battery life, and that could make the difference.

When Could It Launch?

The PlayStation 6 Portable is reportedly targeting a 2027-2028 release, around the same time as the PS6 itself. That timing would make sense, since by then, the PS5 will be nearing the end of its life cycle, and Sony could use this to offer a more affordable bridge between the two generations, since the PS6 will most likely cost much more than this.

A New Era for PlayStation?

If these rumors turn out to be true, Sony could change what a console means once again. A fully capable, cross-generation handheld priced slightly lower than competitors, but with the same if not better power, would change the market, appealing to a wider range of players.

For now, it is all speculation, but it is clear that all the companies are seriously preparing for the next generation of gaming!
