Sony Finally Removes PC Region Locks for a Few Games

In a surprise move, Sony has quietly lifted regional restrictions on several of its most popular PC games, making them available again in over 100 countries. This change was noticed by BlueSky user Wario64. There hasn’t been an official announcement from Sony yet, but according to the Steam database changes, the following titles are now unlocked in 177 previously restricted countries:

  • Helldivers 2
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • The Last of Us Part II Remastered
  • Spider-Man 2

Why Were These Games Locked Before?

The biggest issue that you can encounter if you want to play a Sony game on PC, is the fact that you are required to link your Steam account to a PlayStation Network (PSN) to play some Sony games. This caused a ton of backlash. Not only do some players not want to create a PSN account, but many countries simply don’t have access to it. Meaning, players there couldn’t play the game at all.

As a result, Sony removed Helldivers 2 from sale in those regions. But after public complaints, they backtracked and removed the PSN login requirement not just for Helldivers 2, but also for other games like Spider-Man 2.

What Changed Now?

With the June 11th, 2025 PC release of Stellar Blade, the PSN account inssue came back. But this time, the developer Shift Up worked with Sony to make the PSN login optional. That decision is probably one of the reason the game succeed, with nearly 200,000 players in its first week. It seems Sony may have taken the hint, quietly removing region locks for other titles too, even if they haven’t made it official.

Now, players in over 100 countries can buy and play these games on Steam without needing a PSN account. It’s a big win for gamers in regions that were previously left out, and even in general makes the Sony games much more accessible on PC for everyone. Without having to go through the trouble of creating a PSN account just for this.

While this update is great news, some Sony games are still restricted, including:

  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Until Dawn

However, since they seem to be working on it, we can hope any future Sony game on PC won’t have any restrictions anymore.
