WoW Forever Devs Confirm You’ll Eventually Visit Gilneas

In the MrGM interview with Josh “Aggrend” Greenfield and Kris Zierhut, the Forever developers have confirmed that Gilneas, the Worgen zone, is one of the places that we will be visiting in the future in WoW Forever!

Previously, Gilneas was one of the areas that we teased as possible future content in WoW Forever. The Gilneas landmass is visible from Hillsbrad Foothills and Silverpine Forest… but attempting to get there means having to go through rounds of gruesome deaths, be it by sharks or worgen.

Gilneas is Confirmed as Future Content in WoW Forever

When inquired about it in the MrGM Interview, Aggrend says Gilneas being there (and currently inaccessible) is intentional. They liked the idea of making Gilneas visible from a distance, as a tease for where we might go in the future.

He’s also confirmed that the Gilneas we see in Forever is the same Gilneas from Cataclysm and onwards, and they have tools to copy and paste world chunks to create new areas. They do want to do a lot of different things when we finally get to Gilneas, though!

MrGM: Gilneas was essentially copied from the Cataclysm version, and there was nothing there. I tried getting there on the Beta and got killed many times by the Worgen. How did that go?

Josh Greenfield: One of the things that our worldbuilders are able to do is, they’re able to kinda copy and paste world chunks. Chunks are sort of how we geographically organize and separate the world. The challenge is that you have to blend it (to the Classic world). There’s definitely some artistry that goes into properly blending them. (…) It is just the (Gilneas) Cataclysm version, but we plan to do a lot of different things with it once we get there. There is a reason why we put a No Man’s Land around it, and we don’t really want you to go there yet, but we thought it would be really cool, at launch to have it be there, suggest something. And then, when you’re taking the boat from Southshore to Auberdine and you look off to the side, you will go “Oh, wow. Okay, that’s a thing there. I’m going to go there someday!”.
