What Could Blizzard Announce for Diablo at BlizzCon 2026?

BlizzCon 2026 is still a while away, but players are already deep in speculation mode. For example, there is a Reddit thread from a few weeks back that triggered a good conversation about what Blizzard could announce, and the Diablo side of it is where things get genuinely interesting.

Some of it sounds realistic. Some of it feels more like wishlists. And some ideas are just all over the place.

Not Just WoW This Time

For World of Warcraft, expectations are fairly grounded. More updates, maybe something like Classic+, nothing too surprising. The more interesting ideas come up once you look at Blizzard’s other IPs.

StarCraft is one of the big ones. There is a lot of talk about bringing it back in a different way, not as a traditional RTS, but something more action-focused. A co-op shooter or large-scale PvE game comes up quite often.

Diablo Ideas Go in Every Direction

When it comes to Diablo, there is no clear direction at all. However…

A Diablo 1 Remake Is the Most Requested Thing!

It comes up constantly. The original Diablo has never gotten the remaster treatment that Diablo 2 received, and a lot of players feel like it is long overdue. Regardless of this being a straight remake with QoL improvements or something more ambitious, the demand is obviously there.

The more creative idea floating around is a third-person soulslike set in the Diablo universe. What many players do not know is that this almost happened. As reported by Kotaku back in 2018, an early version of Diablo 4, internally codenamed Hades, was designed as a gothic third-person dungeon crawler inspired by Dark Souls, with an over-the-shoulder camera and a much harder, more punishing style. Some developers were not even sure it would still be called Diablo IV. The project was eventually canceled and replaced with a new version of Diablo 4, but the idea of a more hands-on, third-person Diablo has kept coming up ever since.

What Else Could Show Up

With Lord of Hatred launching in April, it is a fair question whether Blizzard will use BlizzCon to tease what comes next for the franchise: a third expansion, a new project, or something nobody is expecting yet.

However, Blizzard tends to go for games that are easy to pick up and work for a wide audience. So a full shift into something like a hardcore soulslike Diablo might not be the safest move, even if there is interest.

The same goes for some of the more experimental ideas, like survival games, fighting games, or completely new spins on existing IPs. In the end, though, there is always a chance they try something different. That is what makes this early speculation interesting in the first place.
