Diablo 4’s next expansion, Lord of Hatred, is launching soon (28th of April). Even before it is out, you can already see the same question coming up again: how long is Diablo 4 going to last?
It is a fair thing to ask. Because, unlike some live-service games, Diablo has never really been known for endless expansions, even if Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 still received updates over time. And now that the next Diablo 4 expansion is already on the way, people are starting to wonder what is next.
Players Are Split on What Comes Next
Over on Reddit, players have been throwing out all kinds of predictions, and they vary quite a bit.
The majority seems to think Diablo 4 could get at least three more expansions, covering major villains like Baal and eventually Diablo himself. But some players are more cautious and expect just one or two more before Blizzard moves on.
Others go in the opposite direction and think much bigger, imagining a long-term plan where the game slowly expands across Sanctuary, maybe even including Heaven and Hell as full zones.
But if you take a step back, the reality is probably less extreme.
The Reality Is Probably Somewhere in the Middle
Historically, Diablo games have not had many expansions. Diablo 2 had one (two if you count the more recent addition of Reign of the Warlock), and Diablo 3 ended up with only one, Reaper of Souls. By comparison, Diablo 4 is already moving faster when it comes to expansions.
That alone puts some limits on expectations.
On the other hand, Diablo 4 is built very differently. It has a more live-service structure, with seasonal content, battle passes, and a setup that is meant to last longer.
There were also early comments from Blizzard about supporting the game for years, though plans like that can always change depending on player engagement and sales. And that is really what it comes down to.
If expansions continue to perform well, it is easy to imagine Diablo 4 getting support for multiple years, possibly ending up with around two to four expansions in total. If not, Blizzard could wrap things up much sooner and then change focus to whatever comes next, like Diablo 5 or something else entirely.

Right now, though, players are already looking past the next expansion and thinking about how the whole story might end.
